About the event
Join us for an unforgettable celebration as Tajo Photography presents an art exhibition featuring black Detroit-based artists at the historic Marygrove Gallery. This two-week long exhibit will showcase original artwork, limited and open prints of select artist's work inspired by the common phrase, "Because I can….". The exhibit is a testament to the artistry of black creatives, explores the reasons why they continue to create and why they do their specific practice. This will be the first event at the Marygrove Gallery since February 2020. To kick off the exhibition, we will be hosting an opening reception on February 26, 2023, from 6 PM to 9 PM, which will include artist talks from 8:15-8:30. The event will feature a live DJ, light refreshments, and complimentary beverages. This exhibition is self-financed by Naomi Tajonera-Huffman and sponsored by Sherwood Forest Art Gallery, to better bridge the gap between the large art collecting community and new emerging millennial artists, while creating a moment for art, music, and community to coexist outside of Downtown Detroit. This event is a love letter to black creatives and the communities they hail from, and also pays tribute to the institution that has nurtured them, Marygrove College. Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience the art, music, and culture of Detroit in a historic setting.
